S06 How to Write an Op-Ed

05-16-2018 13:19

Family physicians have a unique perspective on the health care system. They must advocate for their patients, for graduate medical education, primary care research/infrastructure, and workforce issues to strengthen primary care. One way family physicians can share their knowledge and recommendations is by writing for the public. The opinion-editorial (Op-Ed) section is one of the most widely-read sections of news publications. An opinion-editorial for a local or national publication can reach many people, including policy makers, in the community and beyond. This session will guide attendees through a framework for writing an opinion-editorial. They will brainstorm messaging, opposition arguments, and stories to advocate for family medicine issues. Attendees should bring a notebook and pen or device with which to write.

Upon completion of this session, participants should be able to:

  1. Understand the purpose and perspective of "op-eds" and how they are different from other types of publications
  2. Identify a message, target an audience, tell a personal story that effectively illustrates their message, develop an ask, and write an outline
  3. Consider a strategy for placing an op-ed in local, regional, national, or online news outlets.
