Engaging Residents and Residency Clinics in Community Projects: A Case Study

04-24-2019 21:20

The ACGME and the IOM have emphasized the importance of teaching residents about the communities that they work in. The socialecological model of health, advanced by the CDC, emphasizes the impact that communities and interpersonal relationships have on health. Our program has used community projects through our residency clinics as one component of our teaching and experiential learning about community health. This session will provide background about community health education within residency training, as well as provide examples of two different clinics who serve diverse communities and have developed innovative relationships with community partners. We will discuss strategies to develop innovative, impactful, and enduring programs. Participants will have an opportunity to develop personal plans for community-clinic partnerships to take back to their own programs and brainstorm ways to make these programs sustainable.

Upon completion of this session, participants should be able to:

  • Identify the important components of population and community health education in family medicine,
  • Describe methods to involve residents and residency clinics in community projects,
  • Summarize techniques to build solvent and enduring relationships between residency clinics and community organizations.
