From a practice management perspective, clinic visits for worker’s compensation claims and motor vehicle accident claims should be handled differently because they're paid by worker’s compensation insurance or motor vehicle insurance, respectively, instead of by the patient’s personal health insurance. For this reason, it’s important for clinic staff to clarify if the visit is for a worker’s compensation claim or motor vehicle accident claim, prior to the visit, or if the visit is for an injury or issue to be paid by personal health insurance. If the clinic visit is for a worker's compensation claim or motor vehicle accident claim, only injuries or issues related to these claims can be addressed. Care should be taken to document how the injury or other health issue is directly related to the claim, what steps will be taken, and how long until improvement or resolution is anticipated. Chronic disease management and preventative health care should not be addressed during these visits since these should be billed to the patient’s personal health insurance with routine office visit codes.
