This handout presents the steps of an mindful exercise routine for managing intense moments of experience - such as panic attacks, anger episodes, suicidal ideation, intense craving. It marries relaxation/"belly" breathing techniques with a meditative scan of somatic, emotional, thought, and attentional aspects of the momentary experience. It's best implemented by reviewing and modeling the steps with your patient, including early identification of an aspect of the state to put the "Breather" into action. It can be used as part of a broader plan for such moments, including other stress management techniques, prudent use of "rescue" medications, and thresholds for contacting you, 911 or heading to an ER. I hope this is helpful! GCS
