Given the high prevalence of mental health problems in the United States, as well as the obstacles to accessing timely care, family physicians are increasingly called on to provide mental health services in the primary care setting (Olfson, 2014). It is therefore important to train FM residents with strong foundational skills in behavioral medicine to address the multitude of behavioral, mental, and emotional presenting symptoms. An innovative model of achieving a high level of behavioral health integration has been implemented in a new Family Medicine Residency at Kaiser Permanente in Santa Rosa. The presentation outlines the longitudinal curriculum that has been implemented in the residency program, discusses how implementation challenges, and invites participants to use these lessons to consider how they can more fully integrate behavioral medicine into their own residency programs.
